With each new generation, Dickey’s Barbeque restaurants grows. Started by Travis Dickey in 1941, the stand-alone bbq joint in Dallas, Texas became known for its quality hickory-smoked meats.Throughout the next few decades, the restaurant developed its reputation for great customer service and exceptional fare. The business passed from Travis Dickey to his sons Roland Sr. and T.D. Dickey in 1967. They grew the business to multiple locations around Dallas and the rest of Texas. With the popularity of Dickey’s, it became obvious the best course of action was to franchise. The first franchise outside of Texas opened its doors in 1998. The brothers weren’t afraid to change the menu. They decided to make sides that catered to the tastes of each region where their stores were franchised. Soon some restaurants were serving up cornbread, hush puppies, and other decadent offerings.
As the 1990s came to a close, Roland Dickey Jr. graduated from college and returned to the family business. In 2006 he would become the third generation to run the family business. Under his watch, the company grew nationally and internationally, from 20 stores to 500. In 2016 Roland Dickey Jr. moved into the CEO role at Dickey Capital Group and his wife, Laura Dickey, took over the CEO role at Dickey’s Barbeque Restaraunts Inc. Together they laid a foundation for Dickey’s future by investing in operations, marketing, real estate, accounting, and information technology. Those investments have paid off, with restaurants in the UAE, Singapore, Japan, Pakistan, and more expansion planned. Each generation has propelled the family business, and Ronald Dickey Jr. has taken it into the stratosphere.
