The History Of The American Institute Of Architecture
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization specifically catered to architects in the United States. The AIA features educational benefits, government assistance, association redevelopment and public entities that support the overall design structure and the architectural profession. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C., where they work with many different members that are either licensed architects or working towards their license. Their diligent efforts and work ethic are derived from their professional image. The members also work with the associates of the design and construction team that correlate with the building industry.
Robert Ivy is currently head over the AIA. His official title is the Chief Executive Officer. Currently, Thomas Vonier serves as the President of the prestigious organization. Initially, the American Institute of Architects was founded in 1857. A group of 13 architects decided to get together in New York City and find a way to promote the architectural background and findings of the organization. At the time, Richard Upjohn served as the president. On February 23, 1857, they met to discuss rules and regulations when they opted to invite 16 other prestigious architects. Together they drafted the constitutional bylaws that would lay the foundation for the organization. Early on in the historical process of the institution, anyone could claim that they were an architect. The AIA transformed the architectural world into a secure platform for architects all over the world. Architects now have to be licensed in order to perform services, which helps protect the client and the architect.
There are now over 90,000 licensed architects and related professionals who remain as members of the American Institute of Architects. Each member must comply with a special code of ethics to ensure that each architecture performs professionally and remains compliant. Their array of goals is to assure their clients, the surrounding communities, and co-workers that they are dedicated to the utmost highest standards within their scope of practice. The membership contains five levels in which members must abide by. The five levels include architect members, associate members, international associate members, emeritus members and allied members. Currently there is no AIA membership category for students, however, they can become members through their local state chapters.
The organization is currently governed by an immediate Board of Directors that employs 200 full-time employees. The national organization has expanded its services throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong.
